Which Software Installed That Driver – And When?
Installing a software that includes a driver may leave your system in an inconsistent state. If the install fails, parts may remain on the system. And if the remaining part is a driver, I get nervous – drivers are not the kind of stuff I want to have lingering around my system’s memory. Here is a way of identifying when a driver actually got installed.

How to Analyze Kernel Performance Bottlenecks (and Find that ATI’s Catalyst Drivers Cause 50% CPU Utilization)
Normally, finding the cause for high CPU utilization is easy – just start Task Manager. But what if the component consuming CPU cycles is a driver that runs in the kernel? In that case, there is no regular process Task Manager could attribute the usage to. You will see the “System Idle Process” at around 98%, but the “Performance” tab might indicate 50% CPU usage. How can that be?

This is an update to two previous utilities that have now been merged - "Launching an unkillable process" and "Replacement shell for repurposing a Windows client" - and also adds a few new features. Note that it also allows launching of console based programs without them showing a window at all.

Performance Monitoring Part 6 – The Link Between Disk Activity and Swapping
While writing the previous article about monitoring the performance of the physical disk, I realized that I should also explain why memory management and disk activity are closely connected. As this section started to get rather lengthy, I decided to publish the topic in a separate article.

How to find what has changed in HKCU
There are times when you need to find out what has changed in a user’s registry hive, either during their session or, more often, when they have logged out. This may be to try and understand why an application isn’t behaving the way it should, or because you are trying to find specific settings to extract and put into a mandatory profile or an environment provisioning mechanism such as that provided by AppSense Environment Manager.

Useful PowerShell Scriptlets for Files and Folders
What is the best way to learn PowerShell? Never use cmd.exe again! With PowerShell 2.0 on my Windows 7 machine I decided it finally is time to polish my rusty knowledge of the language dating back to the days when PowerShell was still called Monad. In my attempt to re-familiarize myself with PoSh I consciously use it for tasks that would take me mere seconds with other tools like cmd.exe, or even old friends like Perl.

Performance Monitoring Part 4 – Memory Management
In the last posts of this series I gave an overview why performance monitoring is important and that it is not a trivial subject, that terminal servers are an entirely different matter and they require special attention and, in the last post, how to monitor the processor and related corners of the operating system.Continuing my way through the operating system, I’d like to take an extensive look at the memory subsystem in this post.

Registry Fun (Working With Hive Files)
Sometimes it is necessary to export/import data from or into the registry for some sort of additional processing. To this end, often regedit is used to create .REG files, which store a human-readable text interpretation of the registry content. .REG files can be edited easily with any capable text editor (even Notepad), and thus are a common way of making a collection of settings available to others. By the way, importing a .REG file’s data silently is done with the following command:

Understanding The Different Mixes Of 32-Bit And 64-Bit Applications And Platform Supported
The App-V 4.6 beta was just released on Monday and we are excited to have released the product we have been working on for the past few months to our customers. Throughout the week, we have received a number of questions about what is supported between 32-bit and 64-bit sequencing, along with running the sequenced applications on the 32-bit and 64-bit App-V client, so I wanted to address those questions and share more details with everyone here.

Permissions: A Primer, or: DACL, SACL, Owner, SID and ACE Explained
Every object that can have an security descriptor (SD) is a securable object that may be protected by permissions. Deciphering STUCKRECTS2
As some of you know I run the website www.insidetheregistry.com and have an ongoing interest in all things registry related. I had what seemed like a straight forward scenario which turned out quite the opposite, basically I wanted to enable the clock for all of the users logging into a machine. Great I thought, no problem, just hack in a StuckRects2 \ Settings registry value which has the clock enabled at logon right?
